What is the probability that every student in a class of 20 will pass the quiz?

What is the probability that every student in a class of 20 will pass the quiz?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Assume that the probability for a student to pass and fail in the quiz are equal (equal chance to pass and fail).

Therefor probability for a student to pass the quiz = probability for a student to fail the quiz = 1/2 = 0.5

Let X = number of students who pass the quiz.

n = total number of students = 20

p = probability of a student to pass the quiz = 0.5

q = 1-p = 0.5

Here X follows Binomial distribution with probability mass function,

probability that every student will pass the quiz =

OR

OR

probability that every student in a class of 20 will pass the quiz

As a student you have probably noticed a curious phenomenon. In every class, there are some students who zip through exams and turn their papers in while everyone else is still working. Other students continue working until the very last minute. Have you ever wondered what grades these students get? Are the students who finish first the best in the class or are they simply conceding failure? To answer this question, we carefully observed a recent exam and recorded the...
