You are to give a heparin bolus of 1000 u / kg. The patient weighs 175lbs. The vial of heparin is 10,000u/mL. How many mLs will you administer?

You have to calculate the I & O on your patient for your twelve hour shift. Your patient has had the following.
NS at 100 mL/hr IV
2 cups of coffee
½ cup of jello
1 cup of ice cream
8oz of chicken broth
Voided 650 mL
Chest tube drainage 120 mL

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans) 175 pounds/2.205 =79.379 kilograms

Order: 1000 units/kg

1000 × 79.379 = 79379 units

10000 units = 1 ml

79379 units = x

x = 79379/10000 = 7.9379 mls.

Intake Output:

Orally: 2 cups of coffee = 2 × 100 = 200 ml
½ cup of jello
1 cup of ice cream

1 cup (16 tablespoons/8 ounces) 240 ml
8oz of chicken broth = 8 × 30 = 240 ml

120 + 240 + 240 = 600 ml

IV = NS at 100 mL/hr IV

100 × 12 hrs shift = 1200 ml

Total intake : 600 + 1200 = 1800 ml

Output: Voided 650 mL
Chest tube drainage 120 mL
