Solid Iron (II) Oxide reacts with Solid elemental iron and oxygen gas to create Iron (III) Oxide. Calculate ∆S * and determine the value for K of this reaction at 25C.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The calculations are as given below [take delta S and delta H vaues from standard data chart]

delta S* = delta Sproducts - delta Sreactants

              = 87.40 - 60.75

              = 26.65 J/mol.K

delta H* = delta Hproducts - delta Hreactants

              = 87.40 - (60.75 + 27.28 + 205.03)

              = 87.40 - 293.06

              = -205.66 kJ/mol = -205660 J/mol

Feed the values into,

lnK = -delta H*/RT + delta S*/R

      = 205660/8.3145 x (25+273) + 26.65/8.3145

      = 83.004 + 3.205

      = 86.209

K = 2.76 x 10^37
