Solid iron (III) oxide reacts with solid carbon to form iron metal and carbon dioxide gas. (A) Write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction, including states of matter. (B) 22.34g of iron (III) oxide produces a 41.04% yield of carbon dioxide. How many grams of carbon dioxide are produced?
2Fe2O3(s) + 3C(g) = 4 Fe(s) + 3 CO2(g)
Moles of Fe2O3 = mass / molar mass = 22.34 / 160 = 0.1396
2 moles produces ---> 3 moles of CO2
0.1396 moles produces --> 3*0.1396 / 2 = 0.2094 moles of CO2
mass of CO2 = 0.2094*44*41.04/100 = 3.78 gms
Answer is 3.78 gms of CO2
