Patient is to receive heparin 1100 units/hr. IV solution is available at 15,000 units of heparin in 500 mlD5W. An IV pump will be used, calculate the mL/hr flow rate. Include units of measure & round to the nearest whole number
Please explain the conversion factors
Ans :
Number of units of heaprin per mL = units / volume im mL
= 15,000 / 500
= 30 units / mL
Now 1100 units of heparin per hour is to be administered
So the the flow rate in mL/hr = 1100 units hr-1 / 30 units mL-1
= 37 mL/hr
