Heparin sodium, 1,000 units/hour IV, is ordered for a patient with a blood clot in the leg. It is supplied as 50,000 units in 500 mL of dextrose and water. How many milliliters per hour should be set on the controller
Ordered Dosage = 1,000 units/hour
Supply rate = 50,000 units in 500 mL
To find = mL per hour dose to set for controller?
Calculations:
For dose to be set for controller, we use the cross multiplication method = Ordered dose X Supply rate
Dose to be set for controled = (1000 units / 1 hr) X (500mL / 50,000 units)
Dose to be set for controled = 10 mL/ hour
Therefore, the controller should be set at 10 milliliters per hour for the ordered dose of 1,000 units/hour IV from a stock of 50,000 units in 500 mL of dextrose and water
