Do you think that management, even though it is not hurting the company, should remove the under qualified person or train them to fulfill the spot so the department does not end up short a person which could then hurt the company?
Hiring and unqualified person has its own benefits and disadvantages. In case a company is short of employees and has to recruit a unqualified person it can be a beneficial on one side and on long run it has certain limitations. Let us see both the sides:
Benefits of hiring unqualified persons:
1) Unqualified person know that they still need to prove themselves, can be a motivating factor for better performance. They will not be aggrieved to develop additional skills and talents.
2) An unqualified person can be trained from the scratch and training can be imparted in a detailed way.
3) Hiring expenses and salary to be given to such unqualified persons would be low compared to the qualified ones.
Lets look at the limitations of hiring an unqualified person:
1) Training cost would go higher and even exceed the estimated cost.
2) Quality of work would be low as there will be low confidence and support and learning curve would become steep.
3) Sometimes they could not make out the client satisfied due to their poor knowledge and quality of work.
4) It can even affect company's reputation and goodwill.
By analyzing all these situations we can conclude that a firm spends many months and thousands of finance to choose a right staff or employee. Hence on the short run though the unqualified recruited person would help the firm but on the long run company may have to face huge losses as financially, replacement cost, salary provided, the reputation and many more. So my suggestion would be to hire a qualified person. Or in case a unqualified person is hired proper training and orientation should be given.
