Are the following compounds acidic, basic, or neutral?
1. barium nitrate
2. sodium chloride
3. potassium nitrite
4. iron III chloride
5. sucrose
6. magnesium carbonate
7. lithium sulfite
8. naphthalene
9. potassium permanganate
10. lead II chloride
11. copper II bromide
12. calcium sulfate
Any compound to be acidic, basic or neutral compound shuold be
fully or partially ionizable in water. The nature of solution
depends on the nature of compound and if compund made of:
strong acid and strong base => neutral solution
strong acid and weak base => acidic medium
weak acid and strong base =>basic medium
weak acid and weak base => neutral medium
1. barium nitrate: [neutral salt, made of strong base Ba(OH)2 and strong acid HNO3]
2. sodium chloride: [neutral salt, made of strong base NaOH and strong acid HCl]
3. potassium nitrite: [basic salt, made of strong base KOH and weak acid HNO2]
4. iron III chloride: [acidic salt, made of weak base Fe(OH)3 and strong acid HCl]
5. sucrose: [non ionizable, neutral]
6. magnesium carbonate: [basic salt, made of strong base Mg(OH)2 and weak acid H2CO3]
7. lithium sulfite: [basic salt, made of strong base LiOH and weak acid H2S]
8. naphthalene: [organic compound non ionizable neutral]
9. potassium permanganate: [basic salt, made of strong base KOH and weak acid HMnO4]
10. lead II chloride: [acidic salt, made of weak base Pb(OH)2 and strong acid HCl]
11. copper II bromide: [acidic salt, made of weak base Cu(OH)2 and strong acid HBr]
12. calcium sulfate: [acidic salt, made of weak base Ca(OH)2 and strong acid H2SO4]
