Discuss how your personal view of old age has been influenced by the developmental theories of aging to which you have been exposed.
Reflect on if and how your reading of the social theories of Erikson (and possibly Peck, Neugarten, Maslow, Levinson and other lifespan theorists) changed your mind about older adulthood.
And, as a result, finish your essay by quickly writing several responses to this phrase, “When I am old I will ..."
Oldage:
It is the age that is near to one's life expectancy. Usually it
starts from age 60 and above. It is the stage where an individual
becomes financially, physically and mentally weak.
Developmental theories of Aging:
There are two major theories that explains the psychosocial aspects
of aging:
a) Disengagement theory
b) Activity theory
Disengagement theory considers aging as a mutual
process where an individual slow down by retiring which is expected
by the society. It believes that this process is beneficial for
both the individual and the society.
Activity theory shows a positive relation between
being active and aging well.
Out of all the theories of aging, Erik Erikson’s theory inspired me the most. The main concept of this theory is that the main psychosocial aspect of this stage is to maintain “ego integrity” and to avoid “despair”. He believes that one can maintain integrity if he/she feels they lead a successful life. Despair occurs when one feels oneself unproductive and when they don’t achieve their life goals. Avoiding despair and maintaining ego integrity will help one to lead a better life in their old age. It helps them to overcome their regrets about past and become productive.
When Iam old I will be more productive and will indulge myself in things I like the most. I will try to overcome my failures in past by engaging myself in more productive activities ; thereby leading my happiest moments in life.
