  1. For each of the following relationships, state which variable is the independent variable and which is the dependent variable, also state whether you expect the correlation to be positive or negative.
    1. The age of manufacturing equipment and the number of rejects produced by the equipment.
    2. Average outdoor temp and the number of days a ski hill is open during a Winter.
    3. Number of hours worked and total pay received during a two week period.
    4. Number of kilometers driven and age of car.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Number Independent Variable Dependent Variable Correlation
a) Age of manufacturing equipment Number of rejects Positive
b) Average Outdoor temp Number of days Negative
c) Number of hours worked Total Pay Positive
d) Age of the car Number of kilometers driven Positive

Independent variable is the one which is input like number of hours worked because on that dependent variable (total pay) is based on. More you work more you get payment hence positive correlation.

Same way, older the equipment (independent variable) more rejects (dependent rejects) and hence positive correlation.

Older cars are driven more so age is independent and kilometer is dependent and correlation is positive.

Higher outdoor temp will lead low ski hills opening so negative correlation there.
