Solid zinc acetate is slowly added to 50.0 mL of a 0.0347 M ammonium carbonate solution. The concentration of zinc ion required to just initiate precipitation is

____M.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ksp of zinc carbonate, ZnCO3, is 1.46 x 10-11

ZnCO3 ---> Zn+2 + CO3-2

Let solubility of ZnCO3= s

[Zn+2] = s (due to Zinc carbonate)

[CO3-2]= s (due to Zinc carbonate)

The cocentration of [CO3-2]= 0.0347 M (due to Ammonium carbonate)

Ksp = [Zn+2] [CO3-2]

so the concentration of Zn+2 required to initiate precipitation will be

[Zn+2] = Ksp / [CO3-2] = 1.46 X 10-11 / (s + 0.0347)

We can ignore s in deonimator as Ksp is very low

[Zn+2] = 1.46 X 10-11 / 0.0347 = 4.207 X 10-10 M

the concentration of Zn+2 required to initiate precipitation will be 4.207 X 10-10 M
