How did Nixon change American foreign policy and why did it go against conservative principles at the time?
President Nixon pursued two important policies in 1972.In fenruary he visited Beijing setting in normalization of relations with the people's republic of china.In May he travelled to Soviet Union and signed agreements that contained the Strategic Arms Limitation treaty and new negotiations to extend further arms control and disarmaments.War in vietnam had crucial influence over presidential election in 1968.Many americans felt they should support US foreign policies towards vietnam.In contrast many Americans felt their participation in the war in South East Asia as wrong.Americans were incresingly concerned with the numbers of US service men killed in South East Asia.Though Nixon had won the presidency he owed his victory to a division in the Democratic party .Nixon made changes in Johnson's great society programs,and proposed no important new legislation.Nixon saw Vietnam as his problem and tried to make honorable peace in South East Asia.When South East Asia became a problem in America in 1954 Nixon advocated Military intervention .
