The concept of determining which reactant is limiting and which is in excess is akin to determining the number of sandwiches that can be made from a set number of ingredients.

Assuming that a cheese sandwich consists of 2 slices of bread and 3 slices of cheese, determine the number of whole cheese sandwiches that can be prepared from 3636 slices of bread and 5757 slices of cheese.

What quantity of the ingredient in excess remains

Solutions

Expert Solution

summary;

Limiting ingredient: which is completly used.

Excess ingredient: which is in excess.

For given question, for preparation of 1 cheese sandwich you need 2 slices of bread and 3 slices of cheese.(given)

2slices of bread + 3slices of cheese= 1 cheese sandwich

So 2 slices of bread = 3slices of cheese

So you first calculate , how many slices of cheese required for 3636 slices of bread.

So slices of cheese is 5454 for 3636 slices of bread.

So you can see that slices of bread is completly used but slices of cheese in excess(we have 5757 slices of cheese)

So limiting ingredient= slices of bread

Excess ingredient = slices of cheese

Quantity of excess ingredient= 303 slices of cheese

For making cheese sandwich we must have both slices of bread and slices of cheese but slices of bread is completly used.so number of sandwich depend on slices of bread( limiting ingredient).

2slices of bread is used for preparation of 1 cheese sandwich.

So total cheese sandwich is prepared 1818 using 3636 slices of bread and 5757 slices of cheese.
