Case study :Today, 60% of Australian adults are classified as overweight or obese. By 2025 that figure is expected to rise to 80%. Many point the finger at sugar - which we're consuming in enormous amounts - and the food and drink industry that makes and sells the products fuelled by it. Despite doctors' calls for urgent action, there's been fierce resistance by the industry to measures aimed at changing what we eat and drink, like the proposed introduction of a sugar tax.
Today 60% of Australian adults are classified as obese. By 2025 it will raise upto 80%. Many people blame sugar and food and drink industry which makes full use of it. Doctors aimed at controlling the eating and drinking habits and government wants to do it by imposition of sugar tax. Sugar tax is a tax which is imposed to reduce the consumption of products with added sugar. Carbonated soft drinks and energy drinks are covered under it. This tax was imposed to reduce obesity. This was a matter of debate in public in many countries and beverage companies oppose it because they would bear a great loss because of it. World Health Organisation promoted the tax to reduce obesity and unhealthy diets. Direct and indirect taxes are imposed on sugar on purchase. Sales tax and VAT are such taxes to collect from buyers but it is suggested that tax should be imposed not only on raw sugar but on sweetened drinks because it will increase burden on consumers and they will less use the sugar and this will control obesity. Some points are against this like this is not equal to all because it will be a greater burden for those who have low income in compare to people who has more income. People will purchase the products from cross border areas to escape from sugar tax because these are not covered under this tax. Daily consuming soft drinks more than specified quantity will increase risk of diabetes. Diabetes caused deaths in great number in many countries. It affects liver and other vital organs. It affects teeth also. This is imposed to avoid obesity like tobacco tax is imposed to avoid cancer. Many beverages organisations are against this tax because they will suffer a great loss from this tax. People should also think regarding taking sugar in a controlled manner because people have to understand that they should be self aware to avoid many diseases.
Summary : Government is trying to control obesity by imposing sugar tax on people but people should also understand the seriousness of this matter.
