Breathing should be conventionally be through the nose, but often times many people breathe through their mouth out of habit and in times of any problems related to nose which prevents them from breathing through nose.
Nostrils function is to filter air, maintain its temoerrature and humidity of air going into the lungs, mouth breathing does not do these and cause various problems.
Drawbacks of breathing through mouth includes-
1. lack of filtration of air occurs through the mouth. Nostrils have fine hair which obstruct particles and trap microbes aswell leading to purified air going into the lungs. breathing through mouth, hinders this and no filtration of air occurs.
2. In children, it can lead to crooked tooth, facial deformities and poor growth- as there will be increased chances of infection rate. (this is not seen immediately, but rather which is developed on chronic mouth breathing).
3. It causes bad breathe and gum disease. Mouth breathing can lead to dry air, which leads to bad breathe and other gum infections which is commonly seen in adults.
4. Increased rise of allegies, tonsilitis, blockage of sinuses aswell as a long term consequence.
5. Breathing air only through mouth can cause decrease in the ventilation. Which can also cause burden on heart and lungs for better oxygen supply.
6. It can worsen already existing health conditons (infections).
7. It can alter children faces- can develop into long, narrow face called long face syndrome in children.
8. Other conditions which may arise include- snoring, sleep aplean, tongue thrusting habit, crowned teeth on a long term mouth breathing.
