Think of real-life examples of proportions and how a proportion of a small population could be compared to the proportion of a larger population.
REAL LIFE EXAMPLE OFPROPORTIONS;
Consider the number of smokers in your class.
Let
n = Total strength of your class
x = Number of smokers in your class.
Then
is the proportion of smokers in your class.
EXAMPLE OF HOW A PROPORTION OF A SMALL POPULATION COULD BE COMPARED TO THE PROPORTION OF A LARGER POPULATION:
(i) Small Population:
Consider your class as a small population.
Let
n = Total strength of class = 30 students
x = Number of smokers in your class = 10
So,
p= Proportoion of smokers in this small population of students = 10/30 = 0.3333
(ii) Larger Population:
Consider another college consisting of N = 1000 students, of which 50 are smokers.
Here
N = Size of larger population = 1000
X = Number of smokers in larger population = 50
So,
P = Proportion of smokers in larger population = 50/1000 =0.05
Thus,here,we note that the proportion of small population is greater than the proportion of larger population.
