Summarize, in a paragraph or two, the characteristics of cancer cells.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The characteristics of cancer cells:

  • Cancer cells grow and divide at an abnormally rapid rate, are poorly differentiated, and have abnormal membranes, cytoskeletal proteins, and morphology.
  • The abnormality in cells can be progressive with a slow transition from normal cells to benign tumors to malignant tumors
  • uncontrolled cell proliferation, genomic instability, immortality, and the ability to disrupt local and distant tissues.
  • Cancer cells do not have a functioning role, nor do they look like anything other than abnormal.
  • They can enter the cell cycle multiple times.
  • The nuclei are enlarged and may contain abnormal numbers of mutated chromosomes.
  • Gene amplification and DNA damage are common, although these cells do not undergo apoptosis
  • Self-sufficiency in growth signals.
  • Insensitivity to anti-growth signals.
  • Limitless replicative potential.
  • Sustained angiogenesis.
  • Tissue invasion and metastasis.
