alcoholic beverages are produced commercially in philippines, the most consumed ones include wine and beer compared to whisky, brandy and other forms of alcohol. eventhough, alcoholism is considered as a growing issue in many cultures becuase of its deletorious effects on various spheres of life, it is not well viewed as a problem among filipinos. alcohol users are considered as energetic, successful and courageous that motivates more people to become drinkers. the marketing of alcohol portrays a positive image which people think to be well accepted in the society. use of alcohol among filipinos starts nearly at the age of 18 years. the availability and assessibility to alcoholic beverages are easier and thereby the consumption increases among general public. intoxication from alcohol contributes a large number of sexual and drug events. the major contributing factors of alcohol dependence are lack of support from parents and society, frequent exposure tosocial gatherings such as clubs and parties, and influence of media stories. studies show that alcohol related admissions are comparatively lesser than admissions due to other medical conditions. few patients get treatment in rehabilitation centres due to their lack of awareness and acceptance of alcohol use to a medical condition. therefore, they become chronically ill due to the later complications of long term alcohol use.
