What environmental advantages do the Amberlyst-15 beads have over phosphoric and sulfuric acid?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:-

Advantages of Amberlyst-15- Amberlyst-15 serves as an inexpensive, effective, and environmental friendly heterogeneous catalyst for the regioselective ring-opening of epoxides by primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols, resulted in the formation of β-alkoxy alcohols in 40–95% yields under ultrasound irradiation.Commercially available Amberlyst-15 has played an important role in organic synthesis. This review summarizes the versatile synthetic applications of Amberlyst-15 in different chemical transformations.

Amberlyst-15 is an active catalyst for the acylation of phenols and alcohols by means of acetic anhydride as an acylating agent at room temperature under heterogeneous conditions. It is also one of the most resistant catalysts and can be used over a prolonged period.

Side effect of Sulphuric Acid & Phosphoric Acid:-

  • Sulfuric acid will exist as particles or droplets in the air if released to the atmosphere. It dissolves when mixed with water. It has moderate acute (short-term) toxicity on aquatic life. Sulfuric acid is very corrosive and would badly burn any plants, birds or land animals exposed to it.
  • Concentrated phosphoric acid is acidic enough to be dangerous. According to the MSDS, concentrated phosphoric acid is highly corrosive and can cause serious injury if ingested, including severe burns in the mouth and throat.
