Mike has a solution of 1.0 mH NaOH in a dialysis bag that is only permeable to water. She adds the dialysis bag into a bath solution of 1.0 mM of maltose. The solute(s) are: Select all that apply.

-Water

-Maltose

-OH-

- Glucose

-Na+

Solutions

Expert Solution

The solutes are :

OH-

Glucose

Na+

Reason : Maltose is a disaccharide of glucose. Two Glucose molecules are linked by a glycosidic bond, hence forming Maltose. When mixed in water, this glycosidic linkage is broken down by hydrolysis and ultimately frees up these two Glucose molecules. Now they will exist as Glucose in the solution, hence making it the solute.

Now, when NaOH is mixed in water, the ionic bond between Na and OH is broken. So they split into ions, namely Na+ and OH-. These ions exist in free State in the solution, and hence act as the solute.

Water always remains the solvent in both cases, so it's not the answer.
