Imagine that you have been assigned four substances from which you will observe the rate of diffusion: substance #1: 212mg? substance #2: 1918 mg substance #3: 50 mg substance #4: 4 mg a) substance #2 will diffuse fastest at first but the other materials will catch up within an hour b) The rate of diffusion for the four substance will be equal

Solutions

Expert Solution

Diffusion is a passive transport process where molecules move from a region of higher concentration gradient to a region with a lower concentration gradient.

The rate of diffusion is directly proportional to the concentration gradient. Higher the concentration gradient, Higher the rate of diffusion.

Diffusion occurs till equilibrium is achieved, i.e, concentration on both sides is equal. The net movement would be zero at equilibrium.

Among the 4 substances given, substance #2 has a higher amount compared to the other three. therefore, the concentration would be higher for this. The rate of diffusion for substance #2 would be higher compared to the other three substances initially. However, after a while, the diffusion rate would be almost the same since substance#2 has diffused more initially.

a) substance #2 will diffuse fastest at first but the other materials will catch up within an hour
