the density of crystalline gypsum is 2.32 g per cubic centimetre. What volume of gypsum is generated per year? ( Infact the volume is several times larger because of the porosity of the gypsum produced)
The disposal of by product gypsum (CaSO4 H20) is a significant problem for fertilizer manufacturers. A typical fertiliser plant may produce 100 metric tons of phosphoric acid per day by wet acid process. ( 1 metric ton = 10^3kg). What mass of gypsum is produced per year?
Given that;
A typical fertiliser plant may produce 100 metric tons of phosphoric acid per day by wet acid process.
1 metric ton = 10^3kg
So 100 metric ton = 100 metric ton * 10^3kg /1 metric ton
= 10^5 kg per day
One year = 365 days
10^5 kg per day *365 daays / 1 year
= 3.65*10^7 kg / year
= 3.65*10^10 g / year
= 36500 metric ton / year

density = mass/ volume
volume = mass/ density
= 3.65*10^10 g / year /2.32 g per cubic centimetre
= 1.57*10^10 cubic centimetre / year
