Functions of manager include planning, organising, leading and controlling.
The planning function of manager includes the role of setting the mission, vision, goals, objectives and strategies for the project that has been acquired by the organisation and for the organisation as a whole. It includes performance of the decisional role where manager is supposed to act as an entrepreneur and should take certain amount of risk to plan for the future and to decide on the resources that the company should acquire to arrange for the capacity required for implementation of the plan, he is supposed to act as a disturbance handler and negotiator during sales, contracts, purchases and budgets.
Organising function of manager includes his role of being interpersonal. While organising the resources for implementation of the plan, a manager is supposed to set up a schedule by allocating the tasks and the physical resources to the team members. Manager is supposed to show his leadership qualities during organising the resources so that with the minimum possible resources, maximum output can be obtained. Within this function manager is supposed to network appropriately between the internal and external stakeholders of the company by appropriately sharing the information throughout the supply chain of the company.
Leading is a function where manager is supposed to play a role of guardian for the team members. In need, he should also play a role of being a mentor for his subordinates to resolve their personal and professional problems.
Controlling is a function where manager needs to play a role of monitor who should control the subordinates from getting diverted from the mission and goal of the company.
