Why is the clock spring called a spring?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The spiral spring used in a clock used as a spring.

A clock spring is used inside the steering of a car. It is used to connect the horn and other switches and controls mounted on the steering wheel. It is just e ribon containing simple conductors. But it looks like the spiral spring of a clock. Though it is 12 foot long, but still it is not sufficient to turn the steering sheel infinitely. So, somewhere it restricts the movement of steering wheel. Which maybe a reason to call it as a spring.

A spring must store energy and release it, which is called as a restoring force in definition. But clock spring of a steering wheel has none of the properties which a spring should have. Still it is called as spring due to its shape, which is very similar to the spring of a clock.

Google it for better visuals. Sorry for bad drawing

We want to design a simple "four clock pulse" timer circuit. In addition to the clock input, the timer has a "Restart" input (R), three "data" outputs (ABC) which indicate the count, and one "beeper" output (D). The behavior of the circuit is as follows: Idle Mode The timer output is ABC=100 and the beeper is off (D=0) as long as R=0. If R=1 on any clock edge in this mode, the timer goes into the... As a spring is heated, its spring “constant” decreases in value. Suppose a spring is heated so that the spring “constant” at time t is k(t) = 6 − t. If the unforced mass-spring system has mass m = 2 kg and a damping constant b = 1 N-sec/m with initial conditions x(0) = 3 m and x' (0) = 0 m/sec, then the displacement x(t) is governed by the initial value problem 2x'' + x' − (6 − t)x...
