1: Can heat flow either into or out of a substance without the substance changing temperature? If not, why? If so, explain and give an example of such a process.

2: An ice cube can exist for many minutes while floating in water, even when the temperature of the water is greater than 0. Explain why.

Solutions

Expert Solution

(1)

When the heat transfer in or out to the any substance, the temperature of the substance will defenately changes (consider no work and other chamical changes).

It is not possible without any change in the temperature the heat transfer takes place when there is no change in the physical condition of the object.

When the substance is doing mechanical work than the heat in or out from the substace without any change in the tempreature because the work done by the system or work done on the system shouls be equal to the hear in or out.

Condition when temperature will not change when heat in or out.

Heat out = Work done on the system

Heat in = Work done by the system

In both the cases the temperature of the substance will not change during heat transfer.

(2)

The ice cube float on the water surface which has higher temperature because the rate of hear transfer between the water and the ice cube is less.

The ice melt slowly because of low rate of heat transfer between the ice cube and water and the ice cube will continew to float untill the cube will not get its latent heat from the water.
