Does tiger lily disperse or migrate? describe what it does with more details.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Migration is seen in animals and birds. It is the deliberate movement of an organism from its original location to a different location. Ex- migration of Siberian cranes to India.
  • Plants cannot change their location. However, they can carry out dispersal. Dispersal is the spreading of individuals, from it's original population. Usually, offsprings get separated from their original location, while the progenitor remains in its original location. Ex- dispersal of seeds, pollen grains etc.
  • Dispersal may occur by chance like in case of separation of fishes due to water current.
  • It is also a means of propagation for some plant species, and it may occur through air, water or by animals, birds, insects etc.
  • Tiger lily is a sterile plant. It does not produce seeds, since it is a sterile plant. However, it can be propagated by using its bulbils. When a bulbil is sown in the soil, it grows into a new plant. Therefore, in case of tiger lily, the mode of dispersal is it's bulbil.
