If you are given a mixture of 1,2-dichloroethane and acetic acid which distillation method is more effective in achieving separation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

There are different types of distillation methods.

Boiling point of 1,2 dichloroethane is 83 degree C, whereas acetic acid has b.p. of 118 degree C.

There is a significant difference in their boiling points so simple distillation can be performed for seperation.

otherwise for much effective seperation, Fractional Distillation can be performed

This technique is used for mixtures where the boiling points vary by less than 20 degree C from each other. This technique can be performed at atmospheric pressure and requires a more elaborated setup i.e., Vigreux columns, spinning band columns, etc. This method allows a cleaner seperation than simple distillation.
