1.      According to a report by the American Psychological Association (APA), there has been a 30% increase in students seeking appointments at college counseling centers between 2009-10 and 2014-15, even though student enrollment grew by only 5% during this time. Thus, as we move into final exams, I am interested in better understanding the stress levels of my PSY 292 students. Specifically, I would like to know whether the average stress level of my students (N=33) is significantly different than that of U.S. undergraduates. According to the APA report, the mean stress score as indicated by the Stress Indicators Questionnaire (SIQ) for U.S. undergraduates is 5.6 with a standard deviation of 1.4. The mean SIQ stress score for my classroom is 4.0 with a standard deviation of 1.1. α = 0.005.

a.      Is this a non-directional or directional test? How do you know?

b.      What is the parameter of interest?

c.       Which inference test would you use? Why?

d.      Is this a one tail or two tailed test? How do you know?

e.      Write the null and research hypotheses. Interpret what the hypotheses convey.

f.        If the p value for this test was less than alpha, what would this indicate?

g.       The p value for this test equals 0.011. I interpret this to mean there is 1.1% chance that my H0 is true. Explain why I am mistaken.

1) In 2003, the American Psychological Association conduced a survey of a random sample of psychologists with various academic degrees and levels of experience. Of the 31 psychologists who received a masters degree in 2003, the mean income was $43,834 with a standard deviation of $16,870. Use this information to construct a 99% confidence interval for the average salary of psychologists receiving masters degrees in 2003. 2)In 2003, the American Psychological Association conduced a survey of a random sample of...

According to a 1996 report on full-term pregnancies by the American Medical Association, women pregnant with twins who received intensive prenatal care had an infant mortality rate of 5.4 deaths per thousand live births, while women pregnant with twins who received only adequate care had an infant mortality rate of 3.9 deaths per thousand live births. Does this suggest that a woman pregnant with twins should be concerned about seeking too much medical care? Explain fully in one or two...

Since 2007, the American Psychological Association has supported an annual nationwide survey to examine stress across the United States. A total of 360 Millennials (18- to 33-year-olds) were asked to indicate their average stress level (on a 10-point scale) during a month. The mean score was 5.4. Assume that the population standard deviation is 2.3. (a) Give the margin of error for a 95% confidence interval. (Round your answer to three decimal places.) (1) According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, a 40-year old woman, who is symptom free, has a 0.4% (0.004) chance of having breast cancer. Suppose she undergoes a mammogram and receives an “abnormal” result. According to the National Cancer Institute, mammograms report “abnormal” 80% of the time when a woman does, in fact, have breast cancer and 10% of the time when no cancer is present. (a) Given the "abnormal" mammogram result, what is the probability the...
