The following questions are simply applications of Bernoulli’s principle. (Give complete sentences as Answers.)
Why is the draft in a fireplace better on a windy day?
What keeps a Frisbee in flight?
Why does your car lurch toward an oncoming truck as it passes by?
Why does the wind increase the size of water waves?
Why do waves form as water approaches the shore?
a)this is the same principle that gives an airplane wing its lift. For the same reason, wind flowing over the top of a chimney can increase draft by producing a driving pressure that assists in pulling exhaust gases from the chimney.Wind approaching the open top of a chimney from above can cause positive pressure in the flue.
b)Lift is the force that allows the Frisbee to stay airborne, and in flight it opposes the force of gravity on the disk's mass.Spinning the Frisbee helps it fly by supplying angular momentum, which helps keep the Frisbee stable; the faster it spins, the more stable it should be.
c)As a truck passes you at speed, it displaces the air that occupied the volume which the bus fills. The displaced air flows past the bus, creating a high pressure area near the truck which pushes you away. After the midpoint of the truck has passed you, the displaced air starts to flow into the area vacated by the bus as it leaves. This creates an area of low pressure which tends to draw you toward the truck as it leaves.
d) Wave height is affected by wind speed, wind duration , and fetch, which is the distance over water that the wind blows in a single direction. As wind-driven waves approach the shore, friction between the sea floor and the water causes the water to form increasingly steep angles. thus increasing tje hieght of wave.
e)Onshore winds do the opposite. They accelerate the breaking process. Nevertheless, ocean floor topography will critically decide how wave energy will transform into whitewater. As waves reach the shore, the energy in front of the wave slows down due to friction with the shallow bottom.this make the wave on shore as water
