  1. During an office visit, 11-year-old Bobby is diagnosed with pediculosis, or lice. What actions can be taken to help prevent the spread of the disease?

In case of Cooper , a 10 year old boy - probable cause of itchiness and rash is stem and leaves sharp hairs resembling like little hypodermic needle, when our skin comes in contact with it chemical histamines and acetylcholine is released causing an outbreak of hives within half an hour and have symptoms of itchiness and rash in body.

It can be treated by -

Giving cotton loose clothes to child

Applying cold compress to reduce itching and rashes

Provide over the counter anti histamines ( levocetrazine)

Apply an calamine lotion to reduce itching and rash in body as calamine lotion and antihistamines can be given without doctor's prescription ( over the counter medication)

Avoid scratching body with nails as much possible and cut the nails of child if big enough .

2. In second scenario , 11 year old diagnosed with peduculosis and lice.

Actions which can be taken to help prevent the spread of disease -

a) Use pediculicide product as prescribed and timingly

b) Daily removal of nits with extra fine tooth metal nit comb should be done daily and after use of comb either discarded or soaked in boiling water for 10 minutes for decontamination.

c) Instruct parents that siblings may also need treatment , grooming items shouldn't be shared with each other and every child should use their own single comb or brush.

d)Instruct parents that bedding and clothes should be changed daily and washed in hot water detergent and then dried for atleast 20 minutes

e) Non essential bedding and clothes should be tightly sealed in bag for atleast 2 weeks and then washed properly

f) Toys and playing objects which cannot be washed or dry cleaned should be sealed in tightly sealed bag or plastic bag for atleast 2 weeks.

g)Teach the child not to share their comb , brushes , clothes and headwear

h) Eyebrows and eyelashes need to be inspected if lice is present or not and if present then manually should be removed.
