MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF
NEEDS
It is a theory of human motivation which is invented by an
American psychologist Sir.Abraham Maslow in the year of 1943.He
explaned the motivation of human is based on 5 levels which are
compressed in a pyramid. Those levels are as follows,
- Physiological needs
- Safety needs
- Love and belongings needs
- Esteem needs
- Self-actualization needs
The normal physical changes with agingwill pottentialy
affects these needs.
PHYSICAL
NEEDS
- It is the lower need of te Maslow's hierachy theory.
- It includes the basic survival needs such as food and
water,sufficient rest,clothing and shelter,overall health and
reproduction.
- Due to aging there will be some changes in this needs which may
cause the inability to te funtion of the body.
SAFTEY NEEDS
- It is the next lever atfer physiological needs.
- It includes protection from violence and theft, emotional
stability and well-being,health security and financial
secuirity.
- Due to the aging if there is an unhealthy stage which may
demotivate the person.Eg: cancer will lose a person's confidence to
live.
LOVE AND BELONGING
NEEDS
- It is the third level of Maslow's hierarchy of need.
- It composed of friendship, family, intimacy and sence of
connection.
- It means that the interpersonal relationship motivates the
person, physical changes due to aging may cause some limitations to
maintain an interpersonal relationship which will demotivate the
person.
ESTEEM NEEDS
- After the love and belongings level is fullfilled the fourth
level is esteem needs which may include
confidence,achievements,respect of others etc.
- Need for respect and reputation is most important for a
person.
- The physical changes during aging may affect this level Eg:
Once after a police man has retired from his job he may not be
getting the respct in the same way that he got in past, it may
demotivate him and he may express this motivation
by withdrawing from the society.
SELF-ACTUALIZATION
NEEDS
- It is the fifth level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs includes
self-fullfillment needs such as morality,creativity,spontaneity,
and acceptance.
- It shows thet peoples are always not motivated to work by
security or money,As each individuals is unique, the motivation for
self actualisation leads people in different directions.Eg:
creative works.
- The physical changes of aging a person may demotivate a person
from his creative work due to the vision related problems.
