the environmental aspects of a salmon hatchery.
Raw material extraction: Use of natural resources
Objective 1: Reduce water usage during the process of harvesting salmon and collecting eggs and sperm. Water is used throughout the hatchery facility during the egg harvesting and incubation process, which uses a constant flow of water to mimic a stream environment (PWSAC 2020). To avoid depleting the water supply from a nearby reservoir and affecting the natural environment, the facility will follow procedures to maximize efficiency of water use, and ensure equipment is well maintained to prevent leaks. The supervisors will be responsible for this objective because it requires direct action from workers at the hatchery in order to be implemented. Additional training may be necessary to educate workers on best practices to reduce water usage and increase efficiency, and materials will be needed to replace equipment or do repairs. The action will be completed within a year and can be measured by OPIs, such as the amount of water put into the system.
Production: Generation of waste
Objective 2: Reduce the amount solid waste generated. Due to the remote location of hatchery facilities, disposal of solid waste includes incineration, which releases air emissions. The facility will recover costs from harvested salmon by selling fish and unused eggs to processing facilities, recycle and reuse materials when possible, and begin purchasing eco-friendly, compostable products that will reduce negative impacts to the environment. Hatchery managers will be responsible because they have the authority to make decisions about resources and facility processes. Development of new processes will be needed to recycle/reuse materials to prevent waste. The action should be completed within a few years and can be measured by quantity of waste generated, or ECIs such as air pollutants.
Transportation: Emissions to air
Objective 3: Reduce emission of air pollutants that results from the transportation of harvested salmon for cost recovery and further processing. Build additional refrigeration and storage facilities for harvested salmon that will allow transportation of salmon to off-site facilities to become less frequent. The hatchery manager or upper management in the organization will be responsible for this objective. Resources will include additional land to be converted to storage facilities and building materials. The action should be completed over several years and can be measured by number and frequency of vessels that travel to the hatchery each year.
Give your feedback and pose a question to be answered based on the post above?
The above post intends to reflect on the various environmental aspects of a salmon hatchery which can be used to study and implement the ways to reduce the negative impact on it through undertaking various measures such as using natural resources in raw material extraction, reducing the generation of waste during production and minimising the negative impact on the air quality through reducing the emission of carbon. The post effectively outlines the details about how each objective can be accomplished with the help of series of solutions or procedures demonstrated. . I agree with the alternatives suggested in the post which reflect on the various methods that can be replaced to reduce the waste which will also in turn reduce the cost also. The procedures such as cutting on solid waste, replacing the plant, reducing emission of air pollutants. The post provides a good understanding about how these concepts can be effectively.
.
The question that I would pose on the post :
What could be the most cost effective and easy to implement processes which can help in water reservation to avoid exploitation and scarcity of the resource.
