Hagrid is interested in breeding Hippogrifts, a magical creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body, rear legs and tail of a horse. Hippogrifts usually have steal color beak (b+), orange eyes (r+) and sharp talons (d+). In a cross between a true-breeding Hippogrift with a black color beak(b) and orange eyes (o+) and sharp talons male (d+) and a very rare-true breeding Hippogrift with a steal (b+), ruby eyes (r) and dull talons (d). He obtains only F1offspring with steal color beaks (b+), orange eyes (r+) and sharp talons (d+). However, if the F1 males were bred to the rare Hippogrift with a black (b) beak, ruby eyes (r) and dull talons (d), he obtains the following Hippogrifts. Hagrid was very confused with this data. He asked Hermonine to explain the outcome to him.

Draw the map of the 3 genes showing their relative distances.

What is the interference?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer-

Map distance between b and r is 12.6 mapunitsm r and d is 9.4 mapunits.

Interference = -0.86

Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper, is fascinated with dragons. A true-breeding Common Welsh Green Dragon with green scales (b+), brown eyes (p+) and a smooth tail (s) was crossed to a true-breeding Hebridean Black Dragon with black scales (b), purple eyes (p) and a spiked tail (s+). All of the F1 dragons had green scales, brown eyes and a smooth tail. When the green scaled, brown eyed and smooth tailed F1 females were crossed to true-breeding black scaled (b), purple eyed...

You are studying wing colour in butterflies. You cross pure-breeding male butterflies that have blue wings with yellow eyespots, with pure-breeding female butterflies with orange wings and black eyespots. The F1 males all have orange wings and black eyespots, while the females have blue wings and yellow eye spots. You cross the F1 males and females and obtain the following F2 (the male and female F2 give the same ratios): 90 with orange wings and black eyespots 90 with blue...

The head of a computer science department is interested in estimating the proportion of students entering the department who will choose the new computer engineering option. A preliminary sample indicates that the proportion will be around 0.208. What size sample should the department head take if she wants to be 95% confident that the estimate is within 0.02 of the true proportion?
