Solutions

Expert Solution

1) MEAN:

The mean is the average of all numbers and is sometimes called the arithmetic mean. To calculate mean, add together all of the numbers in a set and then divide the sum by the total count of numbers.

Excel function used is "=AVERAGE(select array of values of each variables)"

MEDIAN:

The statistical median is the middle number in a sequence of numbers. To find the median, organize each number in order by size; If the number of observations is odd, the median is the middle value and if the number of number of observations is even, the median is the mean of middle two values.

Excel function used is "=MEDIAN(select array of values of each variables)"

MODE:

The mode is the number that occurs most often within a set of values.

Excel function used is "=MODE(select array of values of each variables)"

TABLE OF VALUES:

2) STANDARD DEVIATION:

The standard deviation is the square root of the arithmetic mean of the squares of deviations of observations from their mean value. It is generally denoted by .

Excel function used is "=STDEV(select array of values of each variables)"

VARIANCE:

Variance is the square of standard deviation.

Excel function used is "=VAR(select array of values of each variables)"

TABLE OF VALUES:

3) FIRST QUARTILE:

The first quartile, denoted by Q1 , is the median of the lower half of the data set. This means that about 25% of the numbers in the data set lie below Q1 and about 75% lie above Q1 .

Excel function used is "=QUARTILE(select array of values of each variables,1)"

Here 1 specifies first quartile.

SECOND QUARTILE (MEDIAN):

The median is the midpoint value of a data set, where the values are arranged in ascending or descending order denoted by Q2.This means that about 50% of the numbers in the data set lie below Q2 and about 50% lie above Q2 .

Excel function used is "=QUARTILE(select array of values of each variables,2)"

Here 2 specifies second quartile.

THIRD QUARTILE:

The third quartile, denoted by Q3 , is the median of the upper half of the data set. This means that about 75% of the numbers in the data set lie below Q3 and about 25% lie above Q3.

Excel function used is "=QUARTILE(select array of values of each variables,3)"

Here 3 specifies third quartile.

1) HISTOGRAM AND FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION:

For After:

For Before:

3) STEM AND LEAF DIAGRAM FOR FIRST 30 VALUES OF AFTER:

First get the maximum and minimum values of the sample using excel function "=MAX(array of values)" and "=MIN(array of values)". In our data minimum value is 112 and maximum value is 212. Check the first two digits and form the stem and last digits will be the leaves. So stem values lies from 11 to 21. And then form the leaves by filling up the last digit of each sample values. Hence we get the stem and leaf plot.

COMPUTING LESLIE MATRIX Example After one year, we have only 250 fishes left. And then 125 have reached their reproduction rate. If we set f3 = 8, then we are back to n = (1000, 0, 0): We see that n1 = (0, 250, 0), n2 = (0, 0, 125), n3 = (1000, 0, 0) Exercise Write down the Leslie matrix for the previous example and calculate for various choices of n the population vectors ni. Suppose the High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels of 20 subjects were measured before and after the treatment. We want to find out if, in general, the treatment will lead to improvements of health, i.e., increasing the HDL cholesterol level. The mean and standard deviation of the difference are 2.05, 2.837, respectively. We assume the differences follow normal. Use ? =0.05.
