It is known that the following relations are valid for a reversible, adiabatic process in an ideal gas: Tv^(gamma-1) = constant, Pv^gamma = constant, where gamma = Cp/Cv. how do these relations look for a van der waals gas?

Solutions

Expert Solution

van der waals gas equation for n mole is given by

(P+an2/V2)(V-nb)=nRT

For ideal gas we know that PV=const and TV-1=constant where =is the ratio of two specific heat of gas which are at constant pressure and constant volume respectively.

Now for van der waal gas we have

i) (P+a/V2)(V-b)=constant and

ii) (V-b)R(RT)CV=constant
