For this assignment, you will choose two case studies from the four available in the following resource: United Nations Association. (2014).

The Global Citizen Student Reader: Globalization. Retrieved from: www.unausa.org. The cases are as follows:

1) Mexican Government Advises Migrants (page 9)

2) Liberian Plantation Workers Allege Poor Conditions (page 10)

3) Charities Hijacked by Terrorism? (page 11)

4) Call Center Jobs, Once Offshored to India, Now Offshored from India (page 12)

After you choose two, and carefully read through each one, the following questions must be answered for each case study:

How, in each case, did globalization change some people’s lives? How did the changes lead to a conflict?

What was the proposed solution(s) to each conflict?

How satisfactory was the solution to each party?

Can you imagine a way to avoid or resolve similar conflicts in the future, even if rapid globalization continues?

Case 4

  • India has made a niche for itself in the outsourcing world. It produces more English-speaking IT graduates every year than any other country in the world.Due to the lower cost of living in India, American companies are able to save hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • Globalization has led to the emergence of a cosmopolitan culture across the world and the decline of regional barriers of trade, investment, language and other cultural factors.
  • This process of Americanization has resulted in number problems for call center employees. Many are finding it difficult to find a common ground between the two cultures and identities as Indian and American. On the social side, the most significant impact of call centers has been on the families of the employees. It has created an entirely new segment of Indian youth who are being slowly alienated from the Indian culture and values. They have little time to spend with their family members. They no longer get involved in the family get-togethers festivals.
  • Offshoring is also giving urban Indian population unrealistic expectations and distorted goals. The middle-class in India have started to believe that as the jobs move to Asia, they will be able to enjoy the consumption-heavy living standards of middle-class Westerners.there are a number of obstacles present, namely population size, population density, energy constraints and environmental limits.
  • Organizational management solutions do help in overcoming the conflicts through better and open communication with employees, providing them with flexible work timings, sharing of responsibilities, developing a sense of teamwork and empathy amongst the employees, hiring good talent people so that proper salary is provided, better training programs to capture the best talent.
  • Instead of creating work pressure on the employees it is important that in the coming future with rapid rise in globalization the focus needs to be the employees needs and not just what the company wants. Employees are the human resources of the company who better facillities and understanding from their bosses by focusing upon the difference between Western and Asian style of living and values.

Case 1

  • The Mexican government published a guidebook advising would-be migrants to avoid hiring professional immigrant-smugglers and to refuse to carry packages for others. It also instructs people never to lie to border officials, carry false documents or resist arrest. Mexican government mentioned that this guide was basically to tell people that would be the consequences if one tries to enter illegally in U.S.
  • Both the countries have a long history with each and with globalization so many changes have taken place mainly in the standard of living and people migrating from mexico to U.S. Both countries need to arrive at a lasting and cooperative solution to reap the tremendous benefits of directing lawful and well-regulated labor migration into activities that complement and enhance the well-being and productive potential of American workers and their families.
  • New better jobs need to be created for U.S workers at all levels of education, foster investment and growth in both countries, and strengthen the enforcement of American and Mexican law.
  • New system of fees to ensure that it is in American employers interest to hire American workers first; a form of visa portability among employers that would protect the rights of both Mexican and U.S workers as well as providing better workers incentives. All thes measures can help in a collaborative effort between both the countries and ,make the lives of people better than miserable.
  • Providing guidebooks on how to lead lives is no solution but will make people even more vulnerable to take wrong options and may increase illegal immigration even more. Crime rates can increase too if better jobs are not provided therefore its is necessary that for a better future these above mentioned agreements are made and followed in the near future as well.
