SUBJECT: LEADERSHIP

WORDS REQUIRED: 1500

Exercise:

What should you Do?

You have been at your company for close to five years and have had excellent reviews. You are at a midlevel management position and you like your job. It’s challenging and satisfying; you like your boss and your coworkers; your employees are great; and you have had satisfied customers and steady growth.

Nothing spectacular, but things are going very well. A new CEO has just joined the company and she has announced major changes: restructuring, moving people around, new departments and teams, a push for new products and services, new technology, several young top managers from the outside, office redesign to make things open, and much more.

Your comfortable, safe, and successful routine is being shaken up and everyone,

including you, is stressed out.

QUESTION: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Its important to be prepared for change. In today's business climate, however, the pace of change has definitely increased. As an employee working for so long we all tend to become comfortable with our routines therefore it is important to be adaptable. Thus, instead of fearing change, resisting it, or hoping it won't ever happen to you, it's much better to prepare yourself mentally for the inevitable changes that are likely to occur.
  • Being stressed is no solution. When you are seeing these modifications happening around you, instead of getting anxious you need to motivate yourself to look for new opportunities, new challenges, more growth in some other position, basically if you are put into a new job try to own it by focusing on setting new goals for yourself.
  • Open door policy is very effective. Good communication between employee and management will help in getting a clearer picture about the restructuring process. Employees need to approach the manager to explain it to them in detail the consquences of the change and why is it important.Employers also need to be compassionate enough to comminicate openly to employees.
  • Another way to deal with this change is to become creative.Creative problem solving always involves risks. Proposing a new idea invites criticism from others. You've got to be willing to accept such risks if you're going to be free to think creatively and this would help in adapting yourself to the new position if you get one.
  • Take this situation as a challenge and rise above it.It all depends on how you look at change and how you choose to respond to it. Talking to the manager about your concerns is important and also letting them know what all you are capable of in your field as well the contributions you can make.
  • Keep yourself updated including your skills which keep adding value to your company. Do not become complacent in your existing job.
  • Learn to do as many jobs as you can. Take on a leadership role in having your company be successful. Take pride in helping others below you. And always let your superiors know you are ready and willing to help out whenever the need might arise.
  • Become more efficient in your work.As organizations change and evolve over time, improvements in efficiency almost always coincide.
