An equilibrium mixture of N2, H2 and NH3 at 700K contains 0.036M H2 and 0.015M H2. At this temperature, Kc for the reation N2(g)+3H2(g) <> 2NH3(g) is 0.29. What is the concentration of NH3?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given the equilibrium concentration of N2 = 0.036 M

               equilibrium concentration of H2 = 0.015 M

equilibrium concentration of NH3 = ?

equilibrium constant , Kc = 0.29

         N2(g)+3H2(g)   2NH3(g)

equilibrium constant , Kc = [NH3(g)]2 / ( [ N2(g)][H2(g)]3

                                               0.29 = [NH3(g)]2 / ( 0.036 x 0.0153 )

                                      [NH3(g)]2 = 2.35x10-6

                                        [NH3(g)] = 1.53x10-3 M

So the concentration of NH3 is 1.53x10-3 M
