Based on facilities provide ..,theodolite is classified in to following types as..simple vernier theodolite, micrometer theodolite, optical thedolite, and electronic theodolite

Thedolite was invented by roemer , he is an astronomer in 1690. After many years lot of modifications were made to theodolite as compact, light in weight, design is simple, all the parts are fully enclosed and moisture and dust proofing also provided.

Main components of theodolite :

  • Horizontal circle assemble system : there are two plates available one is upper plate and another is lower plate. Upper plate will have vernier scale and lower is carries main scale.
  • Leveling head :it is the bottom component which is screwed on tripod. It will have three or four foot screws which are used to adjust the theodolite by adjusting foot screws

  • Level tubes : level tubes are provided to adjust the theodolite quickly
  • The size of the instrument is based on the horizontal circle provided which varies from 8 to 25mm . it is graduates from 0 degree to 360 degree

  • Clamping screw and tangent screw : clamp and tangent screws are provided on the horizontal circle to control the movement of telescope about axis of theodolite
