Study of role of the genome in drug response is known as PHARMACOGENOMICS.As the name reflects combining pharmocology and genomics.The field analyzes how the genetic makeup of an individual affects his/her responses to drugs.

One current use of pharmacogenics involves people infected with HIV.Before prescribing the antiviral drug Abacavir(Ziagen),doctors now routinely test HIV infected patients for a genetic variant that makes them more likely to have a bad reaction to the drug.Another example is the breast cancer drug Trastuzumab(Herceptin).This therapy works only for women whose tumors have a particular genetic profile that leads to overpeoduction of a protien called HER2.

My opinion on this issue is that 60% of population metabolize medications differently,what metabolize fine for one person might be low for another or toxic.By identifying a persons predisposition to metabolize numerous medications,physicians cab eliminate the guesswork and greatly reduce patients comjng back to change medicines.
