QUESTION 24
The left side of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps blood into the aorta for distribution throughout the body in which of the following?
A. |
Myocardium |
|
B. |
Pulmonary circulation |
|
C. |
Arterioles |
|
D. |
Systemic circulation |
Answer - D. Systemic Circulation
There are two circuits of circulation in the body. The pulmonary circulation and the systemic circulation. The pulmonary circulation carries blood to and from the lungs and systemic circulation carries blood to and from the rest of the body. The right side of the heart maintains the pulmonary circulation and the left side of the heart maintains the systemic circulation. The left side receives blood from the superior and inferior vena cava and sends blood into the pulmonary artery which carries blood to the lungs. The right side of the heart receives blood from the pulmonary vein and sends away blood to the systemic circulation through aorta which is further divided into vessels carrying blood to the head and neck and the trunk, upper and lower limbs. The blood to the myocardium is sent through the coronary vessels. Arterioles are the end arteries which are connected with venules ahead of tissue perfusion.
Hence Option A, B and C are incorrect and option D is the correct answer.
