Compare the adaptations of plants in Tropical Rainforests and Temperate Forests

Expert Solution

Adaptation of plants in tropical rainforest

The leaves of trees in tropical rainforest have waxy surface and pointed tips which helps to drain away the excess water quickly to prevent the growth of algae and fungus. These are known as drip tips. Many rainforest trees also have buttress roots which uses other trees to climb up high to receive maximum sunlight. Lianas are the structures of young rainforest sapling which acts as a sunscreen for them to protect from extreme sunlight. Stilt roots also develop to absorb the nutrients from soil as the soil is shallow in rainforest. The bark is thin as there is no need to conserve the moisture.

Adaptation of plants in temperate forests

The bark of the tree is often thick as to conserve moisture and nutrients. They shed their leaves once in a year at the dry phase. They have a broad green leaves to absorb sunlight for photosynthesis. As the temperature falls and in the absence of enough sunlight , they shed their leaves to escape the burden .

As a M.S. project, you are studying regeneration of eastern temperate forests at the VCU Rice Rivers Center. One year ago, you established a 5m x 5m (25 m2) plot, in which you completely clear-cut the vegetation and have been monitoring tree recruits since. This year, while revisiting your plot, you recorded the following measurements for the tree seedlings that have resprouted since your experiment began. 0.63 0.59 0.73 0.61 0.53 0.57 0.54 0.65 0.52 0.77 0.72 0.39 0.44 1.29...

a) Bromeliads are tropical flowering plants. Many are epiphytes that attach to trees and obtain moisture and nutrients from air and rain. Their leaf bases form cups that collect water and are home to the larvae of many insects. In an experiment in Costa Rica, Jacqueline Ngai and Diane Srivastava studied whether added nitrogen increases the productivity of bromeliad plants. Bromeliads were randomly assigned to nitrogen or control groups. Here are data on the number of new leaves produced over...

In a study on bromeliads (tropical epiphytic plants), researchers wanted to determine the effects of adding fertilizer on the growth rates of these plants (please see number of leaves and fertilizer columns on HW5b spreadsheet). They measured growth rate as the number of new leaves added to each plant after 7 months of fertilization. The four treatments were nitrogen, Phosphorus, both, neither. Which treatments have significant effects on the addition of new bromeliad leaves? Set up an appropriate null and...
