Transposon are jumping genes. They are mobile genetic elements because they can go from one location to the other location. They are very harmful for the genome of a cell because they can cause chromosomal rearrangements.
They can rearrange a gene by changing in architecture or by causing genome expansion.
By the term rearrangement of genes we to say that the order of the genes can be change or even the nucleotide sequence of a gene can be changed.
For example, if a transposon inserts into a gene encoding for insulin hormone, then it will change the sequence of the insulin gene. This is called as rearrangement of gene. Because the structure of the gene will be changed, we can also call it as change in the architecture of genome. And since the size of insulin gene has increased because of the increase in the number of nucleotides, we can call it as genome expansion.
