Long-term care refers to any personal care or assistance that an individual might receive on long-term basis because of disability or chronic illness .

LTC Environment

As prevalence of chronic conditions increases dramatically with the aging ,the need for quality long-term care also increases.
The physical environment is an integral component in long-term care settings. Therefore ,It is critical  to carefully assess how long-term care environments can be designed to promote health and well-being among this growing population.

Ulrich's theory of supportive design suggests that a physical environment supports the patients' well-being with its positive nature.

The theory of supportive design suggests (healthcare facilities can lower people’s stress levels through three elements

  • Sense of control with respect to physical -social surroundings - refers to individual's ability to make choices without interference .This may include control of noise , temperature cotrol, lightning cotrol and also freedom to move about.Usually individuals can manage stress better if they have control over their environment.
  • Access to social support - It includes psychological support from caregivers along with extended support from family and friends.
  • Access to positive distraction. - refers to set of features of environment helpful in reducing stress May include nature like trees , flowers, green scenary, animals , birds , smiling faces , music etc.

Universal Design- composition of an environment in such a way that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.
