Mr. Chan is a man. He is 90 years old. He has had a stroke. Therefore, he will not finish the marathon next week. What type of reasoning is applied to draw this conclusion? Explain the feature of this type of reasoning. Is it possible to change the strength of this argument? Can we apply this type of reasoning in science? Explain with example.
ANSWER: There are two major types of reasoning:
1. Deductive- also known as logical reasoning it is of a top-up approach in which reasoning moves from generalized to specific hypotheses that can be tested.
2.Inductive- it is more of a bottom-up approach in which reasoning moves from specific observations to generalization and theorities.
Here Mr chan is of 90 years of age and has been suffering a stroke and he will be participating in a marathon. After analysis Mr chan situation, a descion is made that he will not be able to complete the marathon base on the deductive reasoning(age and stroke). Here Mr Chan hypothesis is he will not be able to complete the marathon will be tested when he participate the marathon. so we can say that it is base on deductive reasoning.
The strength of the argument cannot be change because it is base on logical reasoning.
yes deductive reasoning can be applied in science
for example if A=B and B=C then A=C
