Bryophytes were once the dominant land plants, then seedless vascular plants took over. Gymnosperms came after that but were replaced by Angiosperms. Discuss the adaptations of Angiosperms which has allowed this group to dominate the plant kingdom for the past 100 million years. Do you think Angiosperms represent the pinnacle of plant evolution or can you imagine adaptations in a hypothetical new group of plants which might supplant Angiosperms in the future? Explain.
Adaptations of the angiosperm plants are:
1. Angiosperm produce the gametes in two different separate organs.
2. Angiosperm seeds are enclosed within an ovary.
3. The xylem and phloem are well developed, so that they can bear any harsh conditions.
4. Sporophytes are distinguished into root, stem and leaves.
5. Transportation of seed by wind, water helps them to reduced competition between the plants
6. Angiosperms flowers are of various color and smell because this increases the chance of pollination
7. They have developed several structure that helps them in water conservation. For example, stomata have been developed to reduce water loss.
9. In dry conditions, plant leaves are converted into spines which helps them to reduce water loss.
Yes, I believe that in future, may be some after some million year ago, new taxa will come that are having more adaptation because evolution is an on-going process. So, it is continuing in angiosperms plants too and it would be better according to the future environmental condition. As, suggested by Charles Darwin, evolution is a on-going processm and nature select the best plant according to the future environmental conditions.
