How might the information gained from this lab pertaining to mitosis and meiosis be useful to you as a healthcare professional? (20 points)
Ans.Mitosis occurs in body cells for growth and development. Meiosis occurs in all sexually reproducing organisms and there is exchange of genetic material between the homologous chromsomes during gamete formation. Son will inherit X chromosome from the mother and Y chromosome.Daughter will inherit one X chromosome each from father and mother and this is known from the knowledge of cell division. This knowledge can be used for counselling to couples about genetic sex-linked disorder (both X-linked such as Sickle cell anaemia, colorblindness and Y-linked such as hypertrichosis) that may appear in their children by analysing the family history of the couple. Stem cell therapy is an important aspect in today's health care system. This aspect is concerned with cell division knowledge and is used to treat various disorders and diseases. For in-vitro culture of cell and in vitro fertilization (IVF) has to consider the perfect stage of cell and hence the knowledge of cell division is required for such procedures. In cancer which involves uncontrolled cell division needs to have knowledge about cell division for treatment. Possible blood group can be predicted for the children of a couple since inheritance pattern involves cell division. Genetic disorders like Klinefelter syndrome, Turner's syndrome, Down's syndrome happen due to defect in cell divsion (like trisomy, monosomy, tetrasomy etc.) and probability of occurance can be detected during embryonic stage. Treatment of some diseases is also possible by genetic crossing between parents during cell division and this knowledge can be applied by health professionals.
