Compare and contrast mitosis, meiosis I, and meiosis II. How many chromatids in a cell at the end of each stage?
Both mitosis and meiosis comes under cell division and is important for cell reproduction. Mitosis is done to increase the number of cells in the body while meiosis is done to produce haploid gametes.
Mitosis does not involve in any change in chromosome number while meiosis reduce chromosome number to half.
Mitosis stages | Number of chromosomes | Number of chromatids |
Prophase | 46 | 92 |
Metaphase | 46 | 92 |
Anaphase | 92 | 92 |
Telophase | 92 | 92 |
End of mitosis | 46 | 46 |
Meiosis stages | Number of chromosomes | Number of chromatids |
Prophase I | 46 | 92 |
Metaphase I | 46 | 92 |
Anaphase I | 46 | 92 |
Telophase I | 46 | 92 |
In the of meiosis I | 23 | 46 |
Meiosis II stages | Number of chromosomes | Number of chromatids |
Prophase II | 23 | 46 |
Metaphase II | 23 | 46 |
Anaphase II | 46 | 46 |
Telophase II | 46 | 46 |
In the of meiosis II | 23 | 23 |
