The DNA located in mitiochondria in called as mtDNA or mDNA.It occupies a small portion in eukaryotic cell DNA,most of the portion of DNA is found in cell nucleus.Human MtDNA also took a major part in human genomes sequencing. Human mtDNA includes 16569 bais pairs and encodes 13 proteins. From their faster evolution than genetic markers,it makes more importance in phylogenetics and evolutionary biology. It also important in anthroplogy and biogeography.Biologists can be used mtDNA sequences from different species by comparing them to build evolutionary tree for that species.
Origin of mtDNA revealed that it derived from the circular genomes of the bacteria that were engulfed by early ancestors of today's eukaryotic cells.Endosymbiotic theory is an old theory of evolution is states that origin of eukaryotic cells is from prokaryotes. In mitochondrial evolution studies shows that most of genes are originated from bacterias, during evolution.
