This assignment requires that you write a policy memo.
Topic Marijuana
Review the following criteria for the policy memo:
- Compose a letter in the form of a policy memo to the editor
that conveys your concerns and proposed solution to the broader
community.
- Identify either a civil liberties, civil rights, foreign,
social/economic policy issue or controversy.
- Analyze how different people in our society may be affected by
a specific issue.
- Identify the government officials or community organizations
responsible for that policy issue.
- Research the issue (JSTOR) and find a constitutional solution
to the problem.
- Provide a recommendation/memo that can be used to help
implement your policy solution.
- In all instances support your position with knowledge from what
we have learned throughout the semester and support it with
evidence.
Here are possible topics (you can choose another, but I
need to approve of it first)
- What do you think is more important: liberty or security? The
September 11 attacks have given us the rise of the US surveillance
state. The United States constantly monitors your private life on
social media.
- Explain the War Powers Act on presidential powers and does the
War on Terrorism change the Constitutional Order?
- Write a policy memo in which you either support or object to
the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v FEC and
why?
- The wealth and income gaps have grown since the 1970s. There is
a widened disparity between the middle class and the trillionaire
class. Where does income inequality stem from and what do you
propose to address it?
- Americans cast their vote every four years thinking that they
vote directly for the next president of the United States. The
reality is that their vote doesn't count, it's the Electoral
College's vote that matters. Should you abolish or preserve the
Electoral College?
